SYNOPSIS:
Guy and Harriet Pringle, a British couple, have moved to Rumania in 1939. As the war clouds gather, Guy becomes involved in political resistance activities, which tends to make him neglectful of Harriet, who would just as soon remain aloof from world events. While Guy goes off on such missions as destroying the German supply lines along the Danube, Harriet attempts to maintain decorum in her home (and resist loneliness) as the events of World War II take their tole on the Pringle's marriage and the world.

TRIVIA:
• Charles Kay and director James Cellan Jones had (and have remained) friends well before filming Fortunes of War. They previously collaborated on a episode of Detective in the '60s.

• Co-star Kenneth Branagh later cast Charles Kay in his directorial debut, Henry V. The film also starred Emma Thompson, an additional co-star of Kay's in Fortunes of War. In addition, co-star Ronald Pickup was (and has remained) a good friend and frequent co-star both on the stage and on TV throughout the '60s and '70s.

• Originally produced for the BBC, this mini-series was adapted from Olivia Manning's novels The Balkan Trilogy and The Levant Trilogy. At the time, it was a big-budget production ($12 million).
